5 must-have marketing tools to promote your small business online

As a small business owner, you know that success depends on effective marketing. Having the right marketing tools to promote your small business online can make all the difference between success and failure. There are some amazing free marketing tools available that can help you create an effective and consistent online presence. In this blog post, I discuss five essential marketing tools that every small business should have in their digital marketing toolkit. They are my absolute favourite platforms and I use them on a day-to-day basis. With these tools, you’ll be well-equipped to reach your target audience, engage with them, and increase sales.


1. Google Analytics

Google Analytics is an invaluable tool for tracking, measuring, and understanding user behaviour on your website. It is used by businesses of all sizes to measure their performance, analyze trends, and optimize their content. With Google Analytics, you can track user interactions with your website and gain insight into visitor demographics, their sources, and much more.

Google Analytics allows you to monitor website traffic, track user behaviour, and measure the success of your online campaigns. You can easily see which pages your visitors are spending the most time on, how they’re finding your website and other important metrics like bounce rate and page views. This data can help you make informed decisions about how to optimize your content for better engagement and conversion.


For a small business, Google Analytics can be especially helpful in understanding customer behaviour. You can use it to see where your visitors are coming from and what actions they’re taking on your website. For example, if you own a cafe, you can use Google Analytics to track how many people visit the store’s website before visiting the store in person. You can also track how many people view specific menu items or pages on the website, helping you understand what content is resonating with customers.

Using Google Analytics is free and easy to set up. All you need to do is add a tracking code to each page of your website and start collecting data. There are also paid versions available that come with additional features such as advanced segmentation and custom reporting capabilities.


2. Canva

Canva is a graphic design platform used to create professional-looking visuals for web and print. It enables users to easily create images, presentations, posters, and more with its easy-to-use online editor and library of templates. Launched in 2012, Canva has become one of the most popular graphic design tools used by small businesses around the world – and for good reason.


Canva offers a wide range of features including drag-and-drop editing, access to millions of stock photos, text and shape customization, and a wide array of fonts. In addition, Canva offers a range of tutorials and user guides to help first-time users quickly become acquainted with the tool.

The free version of Canva gives users access to basic features such as creating images and presentations. However, with the paid version of Canva, users can access additional features such as creating print materials and customizing images with logo elements.

For small business owners who want to promote their businesses online but don’t have prior design knowledge or experience, Canva can be an invaluable tool. Its easy-to-use interface and wide range of features make it possible to quickly create professional-looking visuals that can be used across all social media platforms.


3. Buffer

Let’s be honest, social media is an amazing marketing opportunity, but it can be tricky to be consistent. Buffer is a social media scheduling tool that helps small businesses and entrepreneurs better manage their online presence. It is an intuitive, web-based platform that allows users to schedule and share content across their social media networks with ease. Buffer helps small businesses to stay consistent with their online postings, and even offers analytics to track the success of posts.

Buffer provides an easy way for small businesses to plan ahead and schedule posts across multiple social media networks, from Facebook and Twitter to LinkedIn and Instagram. You can add posts to your queue ahead of time, preview how they will look on each platform, and even collaborate with your team on upcoming content.


Buffer offers two different plans – Free and Pro – both of which provide great options for businesses who want to improve their presence on social media. With the Free plan, users are able to post to three profiles, have up to 10 posts in their queue at any given time, and receive basic analytics. The Pro plan allows for posting to up to 25 profiles, up to 100 posts in the queue, more advanced analytics and more. Prices start at $15 per month for the Pro plan.

Some comparable platforms include Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and Agorapulse. While all three offer similar features, it’s important to do your research to find out which one is best for you and your business needs.


4. MailChimp

MailChimp is my favourite email marketing tool as it’s a super easy-to-use and flexible. It is a platform designed to help businesses of all sizes manage their communication efforts with customers, prospects, and other stakeholders. The platform is designed to streamline the process of creating emails, newsletters, and other campaigns. It offers a suite of features such as tracking analytics, customizable templates, and segmentation capabilities.

MailChimp works by allowing businesses to create lists of contacts, design email campaigns and track their progress. Users are able to select from several pre-built email templates or design their own. Once an email campaign is launched, MailChimp tracks and monitors the performance of each message. This data can be used to adjust campaigns and measure success.

Email marketing remains one of the most effective channels for businesses of all sizes. In 2019, email marketing accounted for 24% of all digital marketing spend, and more than half of companies indicated that they planned to increase their email marketing budget in 2020. Additionally, email marketing campaigns are far more cost-effective than traditional print advertising.


You can easily integrate MailChimp with your website in order to capture customer information and send tailored messages based on their interests. This can include sending out a welcome message to new subscribers, targeted promotions based on purchase history, or personalized product recommendations.

MailChimp can be a valuable tool for businesses across industries, from retail stores to professional services. For example, a local retail store can use MailChimp to send weekly emails with special discounts and promotions. A gym might use MailChimp to send reminder emails to members about upcoming classes and events. An accounting firm could use MailChimp to distribute monthly newsletters with helpful advice on financial topics.


5. Grammarly

Grammarly is an online tool that helps you check and improve your writing quality. It scans your content for typos, grammar errors, and other writing issues, and then suggests ways to fix them. It also provides helpful explanations and tips on how to improve your writing.

As a small business, it’s important to have well-written content on all your marketing materials, including emails, website copy, and social media posts. Using Grammarly can help you ensure that all your content is up to par with industry standards. Grammarly will help you avoid embarrassing typos, clumsy grammar, and incorrect punctuation. This will help you maintain a professional and credible image for your business.

Grammarly offers a variety of plans and options to fit your needs. You can use the free version of Grammarly to check for basic grammar and spelling mistakes. The Premium plan offers more comprehensive checks, such as detecting plagiarism, providing writing feedback, and suggesting vocabulary improvements.

Whether you’re a small business just starting out or an established business looking to up your game, Grammarly is an essential tool for creating well-written content that is both professional and accurate.
